To date the project has trained close to 300 teachers, creating a
critical mass of trained teachers in each of the 17 primary schools in the
Ximhungwe Circuit. The teachers have been taught how to teach
reading using a combination of multisensory and whole language
approaches. In 2011 the Project initiated a new course for school
principals and their deputies. This course, Leadership in Literacy,
focuses on the overal management of a school's language
curriculum.
The Lillydale Literacy Project is closely linked with the Lillydale
Environmental Education Centre. In addition to hosting our literacy
courses the Centre offers accredited computer training for members of the
community and provides basic business services.
