Lillydale Literacy Project

The Lillydale Literacy Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to improving English literacy by providing training for primary school teachers in a rural area of Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Lillydale Literacy Project started ten years ago in partnership with Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, with the goal of improving literacy within the communities outside the gates of the reserve. Early on it was decided to work through local teachers by enhancing their skills in teaching English. The project sponsored the training of the first ten teachers in 2000.

To date the project has sponsored 20 courses for over 200 teachers. The Project has trained teachers in every primary school throughout the Ximhunqwe Circuit (and two beyond). We now have that critical mass of trained educators who provide their learners with the gifts of reading and writing.

“Our principal goal for the Lillydale Literacy Project is simple. We want to provide literacy training in English as a second language for primary school teachers in order to improve the quality of English language instruction, resulting in the improvement in students’ reading, writing, and public speaking skills”
