Lillydale Literacy Project

The Lillydale Literacy Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to improving English literacy by providing training for primary school teachers in a rural area of Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

The Lillydale Literacy Project was founded in 2000 with the goal of improving literacy in the Ximhungwe Circuit in the Bushbuckridge Municipality, near Kruger Park. Early on it was decided to work through local teachers by enhancing their skills in  how to teach reading. The project sponsored the training of the first ten teachers in 2000.

To date the project has trained close to 300 teachers,  creating a critical mass of trained teachers in each of the 17 primary schools in the Ximhungwe Circuit. The teachers have been taught  how to teach reading using a combination of multisensory and whole language approaches. In 2011 the Project initiated a new  course for school principals and their deputies. This course, Leadership in Literacy, focuses on the overal management of a school's language curriculum.

The Lillydale Literacy Project is closely linked with the Lillydale Environmental Education Centre. In addition to hosting our literacy courses the Centre offers accredited computer training for members of the community and provides basic business services.

"Our principal goal for the Lillydale Literacy Project is simple. We want to provide literacy training in English as a second language for primary school teachers in order to improve the quality of English language instruction, resulting in the improvement in students' reading, writing, and public speaking skills"
